Budget 2015: Badal apart, most allies don’t see a silver lining

NDA ally Shriomani Akali Dal president and Punjab deputy chief minister Sukhbir Singh Badal on Saturday heaped praises on finance minister Arun Jaitley for announcing a slew of initiatives for Punjab, particularly Amritsar, in the Union Budget.

The NDA appeared split on the land acquisition ordinance on Wednesday, with BJP’s major allies, Shiv Sena, Akali Dal and Ram Vilas Paswan’s LJP declaring their opposition to the move.

It was a win-win for Akali-BJP sworn alliance in Municipal Council polls. Shiromani Akali Dal (B) won 954 seats (73.55%). It had fielded 1297 candidates. And BJP won 365 (47.77%) seats out of 764. However, there were 3581 Independent candidates.

In the first litmus test after a slew of ugly spats, including Tarn Taran firing, the Akali Dal-BJP combine outscored others in Wednesday's polls, mopping up a total of 1161 wards out of 2062 in 122 municipal councils and nagar panchayats in Punjab.

A Congress bastion for about a decade, the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) is all set to give its rival a run for its money in the Nawanshar municipal council elections scheduled to be held on February 25.
