kerala-athlete-suicide-new_650x400_51430986070 ALAPPUZHA: Three young athletes are still critical at a hospital in Kerala after consuming poisoned fruit in a suicide pact driven by alleged harassment at a government-run sports training institute. A fourth athlete died on Wednesday night. The girls who survived the alleged suicide attempt at the Sports Authority of India (SAI) Water Sports Institute are in the ICU of Alappuzha Medical college, two of them on pacemakers. Outside, their mothers spent a long, sleepless night. “I just want my daughter back. She is my only hope. Without her, I will be left with no one,” said one mother, who lost her husband a few years ago. One of the girls, a 17-year-old, has given a statement to the police. Kerala Home Minister Ramesh Chennithala has promised “unbiased investigations” into allegations that the girls, all champion rowers, were harassed by their seniors at a camp run by the institute. They were “humiliated and tortured,” their families have alleged. “My daughter called on Wednesday morning, cried and said seniors were harassing her,” said the mother of one the girls who survived. The four allegedly signed a note blaming their seniors before taking a toxic fruit from Cerbere Odollam, a tree that grows in the backwaters. Sports Minister Sarbananda Sonowal ordered an inquiry on Thursday. “Strictest action will be taken if anyone from SAI is found guilty of wrongdoing. The girl who died was a very promising sportsperson. It is a big loss,” he said. Two of the teenagers fighting to live had won gold medals for kayaking at the National Games. They are among thousands of young athletes from poor families that join training camps run every year by the Sports Authority. The police are investigating a report that the girls were admonished by their trainers as well as seniors for bringing alcohol to the hostel recently. “I understand something must have gone drastically wrong for these girls to have taken these steps, but too early and premature to pinpoint the exact cause,” said SAI director general Injeti Sriniwas.
