'We are in India because of compulsions, not out of choice'

Amid calls for their deportation from India, Rohingya Muslims of Myanmar say they have settled in Jammu and Kashmir because of compulsions, and not out of choice, and that they will return to their country once the situation becomes favourable. More than 13,700 foreigners, including Rohingya Muslims and Bangladesh nationals, are settled in Jammu and Samba districts, where their population has increased by over 6,000 between 2008 and 2016, according to data available with the state government. 'The reshuffle was expected to show some sign about the BJP's awareness of the looming difficulties.''But there is no certainty that the new inductees will be able to breathe life into the government,' says Amulya Ganguli. More than the unexpected choice of Nirmala Sitharaman as defence minister and Suresh Prabhu's expected removal from the railways, Narendra Modi's third ministerial reshuffle may well be noted for the royal snub that he has meted out to Nitish Kumar. The rebuff would have ...

I first encountered what we now call identity politics very early on, even before I started school. My father was ...
